Mini-Bloggiesta: I shall try!!

So yeah! I'm going to attempt doing the mini-version of Bloggiesta.

I don't know how much I'll get done because I also got a pile of work from... well, work, but i shall try to at least attempt some stuff.

So, my super short list goes like this:
  • Clean Tags from posts.
  • Search for posts whose images have gone kaput.
  • Update my review index (which I haven't done since march of last year).
  • Set post for upcoming reviews.
  • Attempt at least one challenge.
  • Organize review books by expiration date and pub date
  • Clean up my goodreads tags
So, good luck everyone! And May Pedro be ever in your favor!

Bloggiesta 2012 - Starting Line

PEDRO says Hi!!!
Hello everyone! Its that time of the year again, time to say Hello to Pedro once more and kick off Bloggiesta, a wonderful event hosted this year by It's All About Books and some other wonderful bloggers. It originated on Maw Books Blog and I look forward to it every year.

Bloggiesta is all about improving your blog, and sharing the experience with other people. This NOT about READING. This is not a Read-a-Thon, but rather a Blog-Improvement-thon.

Starting Friday, March 30th and until Sunday, April 1st, we party Bloggiesta style! Anyone can join! All you need to do is have a to-do list and work hard at it.

Originally, I was going to skip it this year because I'm slammed with work and stuff to read and whatvs, but in the end, I decided to do a Bloggiesta Lite and just tackle some stuff I've been letting fall to the side 'cause of real life (like updating my review index).

To kick it off I give you... The Ode to Bloggiesta.

Ode to Bloggiesta

Another year,
Bloggiesta is here,
May the Pedro

Bloggiesta 2011 - Wrap Up

Finish

I'm so happy I could participate in Bloggiesta this year. It's just such a wonderful event and it always helps me put blogging in perspective.

This time I:
*Wrote several reviews (of books, movies, and even anime).
*Wrote posts for the Story of My Life section and a few lists (which I tend to neglect).
*Wrote and saved some posts for rainy days.
*Set blogging goals for the next few months.
*Got a blogging buddy (the awesome Kylie@The Creative Geek )
*Backed up my blog.
*Cleaned some messy html
*Got up to speed with my reading challenges.
*Decided to re-kindle my relationship with Good Reads (I hadn't entered to my account since January of last year)
*Managed not to go crazy!

And many other wonderful things. Plus, I got to spend some awesome time with bloggers everywhere.

Bloggiesta, I miss you already.

See you next time.
Alex

Blog Goals - Bloggiesta 2011

PedroSo, Amy from My Friend Amy has a mini-challenge going on regarding Blogging Goals. And I decided to post mine here, in the spirit of Bloggiesta (y ole!)

So, after thinking on it for a while, these are my goals:

By Sunday - I hope to be finished with my list and to be up to date with my reviews and other posts.

By April - I hope to have developed a posting schedule, so the blog isn't left without updates for more than a couple of days (tops). Also, hope to have posts scheduled in advance.

By June - I hope to have a smaller TBR pile, to have my reading challenges under control, and to have adopted a meme or a feature for the blog - other than the Book Blog Hop@Crazy for Books, which I do kind of bi-weekly these days)

10 Things Bloggers Shouldn't Do

As part of Bloggiesta, I decided to participate in the mini-challenge hosted by Word Lily about the 10 Things Bloggers Shouldn't Do.

The rules are simple:
  1. Read the post, 10 Things Bloggers Should Not Do.
  2. Rate yourself (on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being muy excellente) on each point. How are you doing?
  3. Brainstorm examples of what you can/will do to improve your ratings in those areas that could use improvement. And/or:
  4. If you feel you’re doing particularly great in one area, share examples of how you’ve reached such excellence.
So, here are the statements, you can read more about them in the link above.

1. You must not expect results over night - 4/5, Why? Well, I've been blogging for close to three years, and it isn't until now that I've begun to get followers and comments in my blog. I can fully appreciate that it takes time and dedication. And love. You must do what you love but also love what you do.

2. You must not ignore your readers - 4/5, Why? I love all the people who read and comment in my blog. In part, that's why I made the decision to install Intense Debate, so I could have more interaction. I make a point to comment back whenever someone leaves a comment in my blog, because it's just the polite thing to do.

3. You must not scrape another blogger's content - 5/5, Why? I seriously try to avoid this. As an author, I've been plagiarized before, and it was incredibly hurtful and awful. It made me feel dirty. So yeah, I avoid this, consciously. I try to avoid reading other reviews of the book I'm about to review, try to write my own summaries to exercise how to put things in my own words.  Yeah, sure, sometimes I see plug in or widget in someone else's blog and I decide I got to have it, so I use it but I also make a point to link the the site were I first saw it, it's just as a courtesy. Like with the "Recent Posts" Plug in my sidebar? I saw it first at The Book Scoop, and love it, see, takes just a couple of lines to say it!

4. You must not expect success without promoting - 3/5 - So true, blogging is not one of those "if you build it they will come" things. I know most of us do it for fun, but you have to take it seriously. I know I need to work on it, myself. I think this streams out of the fact that I'm a bit shy in real life, but yeah, it can go from very simple stuff, like twitter and the sharing buttons you put in your blog, and whatever else you can do to put your blog out there (for good reasons).

5. You must not be another blogger - 4/5 - Going back to #1, you have to do what you love and love what you do. Just be yourself. I'm going to say something that most avid readers know: when someone is faking it in their writing, you can totally tell. You can tell when someone isn't feeling what they are writing, and when they are trying to write like someone else.

6. You must not fail to update you blog regularly - 2/5 - Okay, so I try to post something at least once a week, I really do. But I honestly don't have a blog-schedule, I rarely schedule posts ahead of time. Something I really need to work on, I guess I just need to plan better.

7. You must not Ignore SEO - 2/5 - During my first Bloggiesta, I learned what SEO was, I had no idea what it was before, and part of me doesn't really know yet. But yeah, so I'm guessing I really need to work on it. I took a baby step today by updating my meta tags, but need to work more on it, I know.

8. You must not ignore networking - 3/5, Yeah, I said this during the Busting the Newbie Blues event (run by Small Review). Comment, comment, comment! It's the easiest way to get people to notice your blog. I'm not saying you have to hop all over the place with nothing much to say, or that you follow just so people follow you back, but yeah, if you see a post you like, comment! if you see a blog you like, follow. Don't be afraid, most bloggers out there are absolute sweethearts.

9. You must not have an unreadable/unnavigable site - 3/5, I've seen this in action. Sometimes I find blogs that have very good content, but the design is so busy and crowded that it's hard to navigate. I try to keep mine as clean as possible, but you can tell this year I went a bit... button happy (with all the buttons of my challenges)  and put a ton of them. I'm  trying to find a way to sort it out.

10. You must not throw mud around - 5/5 - This I believe absolutely. Maybe is the debate geek in me, but I firmly believe that there is always an appropriate way to phrase yourself so you make your point but remain respectful. We are word-people, we like words and know how to use them, there is always a way to say what you mean without attacking other people's opinions or ideas. Whenever I disagree with someone, I try to keep in mind that I'm trying to Discuss not Fight. I like arguing with people over ideas and points of view, fighting? not so much.

So that's me! Anyone else doing this?
Alex

Grade Up!

Pedro

Okay, so back in June I participated in the Bloggiesta and part of it was to use the Website Grader and at first I think I got like a 69 and then I added Meta Tags and got up to 70.

Now, I kind of re-check it now and again, and today I finally got up to... 80!!

I even put the badge up finally :)

List Maniac # 1 - Books turned into Movies/Miniseries

Here is the unveiling of a new section I'm calling ListManiac, partially in response to one of the Bloggiesta challenges

ListManiac

In Real Life I happen to be a listmaker, even though everyone tells me it doesn't help any with my anxiety issues and that perpetual to-do lists don't let you reach happiness... but, what can I say? I love Lists, I love checking things off lists.

So, anyway, I'll be adding Lists as I can think them up.

ListManiac #1 - AnimeGirl's Favorite Books turned into Movies/Miniseries

These aren't all the books turned into movies or miniseries I've seen but they are the ones based on books I've actually read and loved.
  • Ivanhoe - One of Sir Walter Scott's masterpieces, set around the time of the crusades and full with castles, abductions, fair ladies and knights (even Robin Hood shows up!). Now, the story is supposed to be about Ivanhoe and Rowena but in both book and the A&E miniseries the relationship that shines through is the one between Rebecca of York and Brian de Bois-Guilbert (played by Ciarán Hinds). In fact, after Zagato from Magic Knight Rayearth and Darth Vader, he is my favorite villain. The mini-series is far more romantic than the book, but even so the scenes with Brian and Rebecca are to die for, you can feel the tension and the longing, and seriously, had I been Rebecca I would have forgotten my puppy love for Ivanhoe and hooked up with Brian instead (and yes, I'm aware Mr. Hinds ain't Mr. Hot but he plays Brian so well!).
  • the princess diaries
  • The Princess Diaries: Perhaps Meg Cabot's most famous series about high school freshman Mia Thermopolis who one day discovers she's a princess and heir to the throne of Genovia. Meg took Mia all the way to her high school graduation during the Princes Diaries Series, but this was the book that started it all, setting a tone of fun, teenage drama and romance. The movie is a bit different, it's sequel doesn't even have a parallel with any of the books, but I still watch it each time it comes on the Disney Channel.
  • Pride and Prejudice: I admit to watching the BBC miniseries first but then I went and read it from beginning to end and it was awesome. You can't say much about Pride and Prejudice other than go and read it.
  • Little Women: Right here, right now I'll admit to being a sucker for both this book and the movie. Sure, it holds my biggest couple disappointment since I totally believe that Laurie and Jo should have ended up together but what can I say? Besides, Christian Bale was both cute and hot in the movie.
  • A little Princes DVDA Little Princess: If you have ever read the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, you know that it's quite different from the movie - and I'm talking about the 1995 one, I hate the one with Shirley Temple because I can't stand the girl, sorry - but both the book and the movie are full of magic and the courage of a young girl who, after a terrible loss finds it within her to keep on dreaming and believing she is a princess... that we all are.
  • A Walk to RememberA Walk To Remember: This one is both special and different, one of the few times when I've actually liked the movie more than what I liked the book. Both my sister Boo and I love the movie, we have our cry-fest a few times a year when we watch A Walk To Remember and sob like babies because of it. The book was good, sure, but for me it lacked a bit of the dimension the actors gave it on screen.

So, that's for me, what about you?

Pedro(<---)Sadly, it's time to wave Pedro goodbye , which is quite sad, he was a good companion. This was the first time I participated in a challenge and it was seriously awesome. Thanks everyone, for the challenges, the tutorials, and the advice. You all rock! Here is the final score, after 48 hrs of craziness, fun and a bit of drama. To Do List Unveil New Sections:

Bloggiesta Challenges:

Other:
  • Brush up Profile
  • Back up
  • Check Tags

--
Changes and (I hope) improvements after Bloggiesta:

Grading System
  • Visually so it doesn't take so much of the sidebar
  • Grading itself: About 1 Star Rating a.k.a Don't Bother. I do have books that I have liked that little -and sometimes even less - but I don't believe in book bashing - which is why you'll never see me writing about Twilight (the book), Two Way Street or Judith McNaught) - so I decided to eliminate that category. If it rated that low with me, if I couldn't bring myself to finish a book, well, that's my opinion and I'm not going to bother to write a review about it.
It gave time to think about new sections and stuff I would like to add to my blog, I don't know if I'll end up unveiling all the sections I listed above, but it has given me something to think about.

Change in size and amount of images, as well as the number of posts per page, to help the page load faster.

Favicon Fear Conquered! - I had tried to add one a number of times but it just never worked and I grew frustrated, but the challenge - and my mostly hidden competitive nature (which is usually hidden by a thick layer of laziness) - made me keep trying until it worked. (That's my favicon, btw, 'cause it shows so small I wanted to show it on a bigger size --->)

Lots of Luv

PS - I'll try to finish my pending reviews within the next week.

PSS - I made an aproximation of how many hours I spent doing this and it came up to: 21 1/2 hrs... which just goes to show me I got no life.

Friday - 9 1/2 hrs (from eight till nine-thirty and then from about four in the afternoon until midnight)

Saturday - 12 hrs (continuing from midnight until 4 am, break for sleep, break for house chores, continuing from noon until ten pm)

Okay, some stuff I found useful:

To add the Favicon, I tried tons of ways but the only one that worked for me was this one @ Tips for new Bloggers.

And, as for adding meta tags, I used SEO Meta Tag Builder to get the code, I tried other sites but blogger rejected the codes.

I'm excited about tomorrow.

Bloggiesta. It's like a Fiesta... in your blog.

Okay, so I've been totally dead to the blog world for about two weeks now, mostly because I finally got my degree (YAY ME! I'm officially a biologist! Though I don't feel any different) and there is a lot of paperwork involved.

Pedro

But, Natasha at Maw Books Blog is hosting a Bloggiesta (check her site for more info) and I've decided to join. What can I say? My friend Vi (a.k.a. the bird of Evil) says I work better under pressure.

Besides, I'm Mexican, I can't pass on the word FIESTA! it's genetic.

In a nutshell, Bloggiesta is a blog improvement challenge, so you can finally do all those things you mean do to your blog but never get around to do, from cleaning sidebars and adding widgets to just plain writing reviews or whatever.

Bloggiesta will run from June 19-21.

What else, what else... oh, well, I'm going to post my official TO DO LIST tomorrow morning (in about seven hours). It will be looooong *insert hysterical giggle here*

Anyway, come join us and lets have a fiesta...in our blogs!

(PS- Isn't my siggy Cute?)
