Book Tag: The Seven Sins

Hello everyone!!!

So... a few days ago Aylee @ Recovering Potter Addict tagged me to do this Bookish Tag (created by BookishlyMalyza), so here we go.

1. Greed - What's your most expensive book? What's your most inexpensive book?
I believe the most expensive book I've ever gotten was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which cost me roughly 400 to 450 pesos when it first came out (about forty dollars). But I so not regret it because it was so awesome.

Another really expensive book I got is the Aussie edition of The Piper's Son, if I recall correctly that cost me about 24 dollars. Again, no regrets!

As for my most inexpensive book: A two dollar edition of Persuasion, it even has a decent cover which is read with the cheap editions! SO yay! I also used to jump on all sort of bargain price deals in Amazon, so I scored quite a few hardbacks for three or four dollars (like my Most Excellent Year, Fat Cat and The Tea Rose).

2. Wrath - What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?
I guess Ally Carter? I don't like a lot of the things and attitudes she has on twitter, and I used to love her Gallagher Girls books a lot but then ending of the series wasn't good and I never liked her Heist Society books. So I don't have any warm fuzzy feelings toward her and I don't see myself reading her books.

I try not to read books by authors I feel antipathy for because I know it will affect the way I feel about the book.

3. Gluttony- What book have you devoured over and over with no shame?
I'm actually a big re-reader, it does my brain good to re-read something I loved in the past, it just relaxes me. So there are some books I re-read at least once a year: Every other way I re-read The Wallflower Series and the Hathaway Series by Lisa Kleypas, and I sneak in Dreaming of You (my gold standard when it comes to Romance Novels) and Smooth Talking Stranger, also by Kleypas. Julie Garwood's Saving Grace (lovely book).

And I try to re-read the Mediator or the 1-800 series  every other year as well.

And Harry Potter, of course! And Melina Marchetta's books.

4. Sloth - What book have you neglected reading due to laziness?
The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donelly, it was over 550 pages with a tiny, tiny print and I have had it for over 5 years and I'm still on chapter three, page 30-something. Same with The Fellowship of the Ring - never made it pass page 120. I've also never committed to the In Death series by J.D. Robb (Dobb? I dunno), they are over 30 books to date and it's just too darn much.

5. Pride - What book do you talk about in order to sound like an intellectual reader?
I was fortunate to have some really awesome teachers in prep school so I read a lot there (French and Spanish literature mostly), and I mostly had access to the classics growing up so I read that stuff. As such I wound up reading some fancy stuff like Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky, those types of dudes. So I would probably pick one of those if I absolutely had to.

6. What attributes do you find attractive in male and female characters?
In male characters I'm all for kindness. I love when the male lead is caring and nice and dependable and the heroine can really rely on him. Not to fix her life but to be her rock when she needs one. I don't mind the occasional alpha, but I mostly love some you can really put your trust on.  Think Levi in Fangirl or Marcus in Just Like Heaven.

Brooding can be sexy I'll admit, but I don't think I could put up with it in the long haul.

In female characters? I like girls who are smart, laugh at themselves and can be vulnerable without being TSTL. I don't mind if they make mistakes as long as the own up to them. I think my favorite type of heroine over all is someone like Suze Simon of the Mediator series or even Alona Dare of the Ghost and the Goth.

7. Envy - Which book would you like to receive as a gift?
Anne of Green Gables!! I haven't been able to back the books so far (the covers I like go in and out of print and the timing hasn't been right) but there is a new edition out and Christmas is coming!! *cough*sister*cough*

And Ouran High Shool Host Club, *happy sigh*

And now I tag some peeps:

What's Making Me Happy...

1. First of all! Marit Larsen's new song "I don't want to talk about it" - which I don't believe has an oficial video yet, so I can't link to it, but if you go to her site (MaritLarsen.com) you can listen to as it starts playing when the page loads.

I think it might be my favorite song of hers (and I LOVE most of her songs). The album drops sometime in October (in Norway) and I hope I'll be able to buy the song then since the single is only available in Norway as of now. The video bellow is of a preview she did with radio station in Norway.

2. Last week's Pop Culture Happy Hour (Live from the Bell House, around minute 16:14) is one of the funniest things I've heard in ages!!!

3. I've accepted the challenge to teach English (as a language) this term at my school, I'll still be teaching Ecology and Geography, but yeah! time to venture into something new. I also got 94/100 points in my performance review for last term. :D highest I've gotten, ever.

4. My favorite Pirate who is a Penguin (a.k.a. Sandy) has been slapping my hand away from the netgalley- request button lately so I've actually managed to make a little dent on my For Review Pile.

5. Discovering romance authors Caroline Linden and Theresa Romain, whose books I'm growing to love so very much.

What's Making Me Happy...

Hello my dears! I have a few things making me very  happy this week. Well, these past few weeks.

1. Mah puppy is doing well! He even put on a bit of weight and is enjoying being the most spoiled being at my house. We still needs to gain a few pounds more but he's eating well.

2. This video:

And the many gifs that came with it.

3. A little behind since I saw this a couple of weeks ago, but Guardians of the Galaxy is still making me extremely happy though I haven't been able to go see it again.

4. Orphan Black. I just finished watching both seasons and I'm so in love with this series!!!! I swear. My only problem is that I can't decide if I'm Team Paul or Team Cal... I'm deeply conflicted over which one I love the most.

5. Just having time to relax a bit after the hectic term I had at work...

What's Making Me Happy...

Okay, so... it's time for another What's Making Me Happy...

There are a few things, like the Jersey Boys and Planet of the Apes movies which I'm planning to see this coming week and I'm very, very excited about it.

There is also the fact that I found this movie I loved (back in, like 2001! when I first saw it) called Cherry, which is so not sold anywhere and so far I had only seen in VHS going for 50 bucks on Ebay. But today I tracked it down in Amazon and I got it on DVD. I don't know when I'll actually get it on my hands since I sent it to my cousin's in Texas, but at least I know I have it.

Of course, I also blew the last of my book budget for the year so I can't buy anything else until december, but what the heck! I got the movie and a couple of other books that I found on the cheap. And I had already pre-ordered my Isla and the Happily Ever After, anyway, so I'm all set.

Oh, and I got a package from my friend Sofia and she sent me these really cute cloth bags for my books that she made herself, and they are basically covers so they don't get all damaged when you carry them on your bag or backpack, and she got me a surprise cover of Wuthering Heights.

Finally, I wrote my first review ever, in Spanish, for the site I started with Sofia.

Last but not least, I got my 400th subscriber!! :) I had been hovering on 398 forever! :D

And that's pretty much it. :) Other than I hope to make some cinnamon rolls in the morning.

Love,

Alex.

What's Making Me Happy...

Hello my peeps!

So I totally flaked on you with this section mostly because I first was super busy with all the stuff I need to grade (I lost count at 600 sheets of paper I looked at), and then I got pretty sick over the last couple of weeks - first tonsil infection and then something weird in my stomach and I ended up in the hospital twice. Fun times.

But anyway, there are plenty of things keeping me happy and I've been keeping a running list:

1. Hearing my dad and uncle talk about football (soccer for US people), see my dad is one of those life-long fans who has seen pretty much everyone play through out history; and hearing him talk with my uncle is always so much fun. They know their football.

2. Even though, you know, I've been over the world cup since the moment it started. I have to admit that most of the matches have been pretty good, I remember last cup was BORING. This one has been pretty Okay.

3. This picture:

4. The Escapist Movies and TV Podcast - as I've said before, I'm a big fan of MovieBob from The Escapist, and now he's participating on a weekly podcast about all things movies and tv, he's just one of the unofficially permanent hosts, and it's pretty fun.

5. This article from NPR -Monkeysee "Book girls will Inherit the Earth"

6. This video explaining exactly what FIFA is and how it works.

7. I finished grading on time!! now I just need to write up the personalized reports (oh, goody! Not)

8. Kaichou Wa Maid Sama - I started watching this anime last couple of weeks, and it's lots of fun. About a girl who has this super serious persona at school - which recently went co-ed - and keeps all the boys under control as the Student Body President (nicknamed The Prez); but after school she works at a Maid Latte - a maid themed cafe - to help support her family, and then the most popular boy from school finds out. Of course! Lots of fun.

9. Got new earrings from Pandora! I have been saving to buy them for a while and I LOVE THEM.

10.  And, lastly, the magic of antibiotics when you use them correctly!!! :D

Bonus: My hair is about a month away from growing out of the really bad haircut, and currently it's at a decent-ish stage.

So thats what has been making me happy these last few weeks!

What about you?

Listmaniac: Hidden Gems

So, today's listmaniac is about those books that I love that just never got any popular, or at least not popular on a large scale like, say, John Green's books or Sarah Dessen, or Meg Cabot or Lisa Kleypas - authors like that.

That's not to say that you haven't heard me talk about these books before, because I probably have pimped them... and often, but still, I tried to dig into the obscure recesses of my reading lists. So, here we go, in no particular order.

Why Do I Love This Book? It's funny, plain and simple. Libby, the protagonist, loves history and she thinks it will be super awesome to spend the summer working at a reenactment museum in Maine, even if she has to hide her bright pink cell phone within her "era appropriate undergarments", and she often crashes with a local reporter trying to figure out if the museum is haunted.

And there might or might not be a ghost lost in the museum. And Libby's best friend is really funny.

Best Time to Read? In summer, it's non-beachy summery read.

Why Do I Love This Book? Because it takes the authors (and some characters) of many literary classics and puts them as teachers in a reform school set in an island called Shipwreck Island; where everything and anything that has ever happened in a book can happen for real.

It's a smart book too, without talking down to readers, it trust them to have enough general culture to get the jokes and the personalities of the many authors and characters that populate the island, along with the students.
Plus: boarding school theme!

Best Time to Read? During the fall, it's a great back to school book.

Why Do I Love This Book? Well, this one is a bit personal. I went to a seventh day adventist school for many, many years (just because it was really close to my Grandma's place), and I identified with a lot of the stuff Mena went through having to navigate her faith and deeply held beliefs with the word around her; and how cruel organized religion can be on people who don't agree with it.

It was a very interesting book about faith and science and it had some very funny characters and a cute, age appropriate romance and PUPPIES!! Lots of puppies!

Best Time to Read? Another back to school book.

Why Do I Love This Book? It's different, and it's pretty different to what I usually read. Treasure Blume in the inheritor of a family curse that makes anyone over the age of six and under the age of sixty dislike her when they first met her, like really dislike her (and be really rude to her).

Which is why she loves her job as a First Grade teacher since her young students just take her in. Other people grow to like her but very few people care to get to know her beyond the first impression. There is a dash of romance, but for me it's all over the other types of love that people get to have in their lives.

Best time to Read? Anytime really, but it's also kind of a cozy book, so maybe when the weather turns cold.

Why Do I Love This Book? Because it's a modern tale retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion and it actually gets it pretty right. And Persuasion is one story that I love, this whole idea of giving love a second chance, even if there was some hurt involved.

Plus, in this version, Wentworth is a marine biologist which is speaks to many of my wheelhouses as a hidrobiologist. Other than that, it's a very sweet story and I like Anna and Rick and reading their story gives me warm fuzzies.

Best time to Read? I would say this is more of a holiday book, definitely wintery, anyway since it's when the book takes place (late fall, early winter).

Well, that's me! Please let me know if you got some hidden gem you want to share! I'm alway looking for out of the box books ;)

What's Making Me Happy...

Hello!
Sorry, I didn't get a chance to post last week, it was nuts as it usually is at work during exam days. *sigh*

But, this week I do have stuff that made me happy:

1. Made brownies from scratch and they were actually pretty good!! Chocolate-y as hell but good!! Also made cookies and they turned out all right!

2. Almost done with evaluations and relatively few of my kids got low grades or flunked their first evaluation. This makes me happy as it means less time arguing with them over homework they never did. One down, 2 more to go.

3. Got a moment of pride when my kids - most of which I had last term - did these awesome cards detailing the characteristics of each ecosystem we studied last term. I love when my kids surprise me with top quality work.

4. New projects: So, I started a blog with my friend Sofia so we can review books in Spanish! I'm thinking we are going to do mostly video blogs but who knows! :) I'm just excited.

Whats Making Me Happy... (4)

Hey!!
Sorry I just couldn't do this last week because I was rushing to finish some books - which mostly turned out be excellent - so yeah, time got away from me.

So, what's making me happy this week:

1. Sandy-Belle a.k.a. Pirate Penguin graduated from college!!!! *throws confetti around * She's one of my dearest bloggy-pals and I'm just so happy for her, plus! this probably means I'll get to see her around more.

2. Sabrina the Teenage Witch - I've been re-watching the series from the very beginning. I grew up watching Sabrina and really love the show - I was actually kind of surprised to see how many of my favorite episodes were from season one!! - and it has been lots of fun. Makes me feel like a teenager again.

3. Mash-Potatoes - Had some yesterday and found it very comforting.

4. Mom is out of her dietary restrictions so everything is back on the menu!!

So, that's me, this week. What about you?

What's Making me Happy... (3)

So, last week was a bit of a mixed bag - what with my mom having to go to the doctor for some testing and my feet aching because I was out of practice wearing shoes! - but there were some things that got me through, like:

1. First week of class and none of my groups pissed me off. This, believe it or not, is a rare occurrence, but I managed to be in and out of class in time and not get annoyed by anything. I felt so zen.

2. My Dog's 10th birthday on May 9th. I love my dog and cherish every day he has spent with us.

I've been looking forward to this series since I saw the movie pilot at the end of last year. It is manipulative, sentimental and a little too Goody-two shoes, but I find it very comforting. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I would watch Touched by an Angel with my Grandma - which aired forever here in my country - plus I find Eric Mabius to be super charming.

It's a web comic that tells the adventures of the members of the Justice League if they were 8-year olds. You can see it here where someone is compiling it chronologically or you can check it out at the Author's page. I've been reading it non-stop and it completely awesome. It made my weekend, particularly this bit from Episode 128.

What's Making Me Happy.., (2)

Hello my darling peeps!
I only got one thing making me happy this week but it's making me SUPER HAPPY!!!

A few days ago, Meg Cabot announced she's going back to both the Princess Diaries and the Mediator Series next year, with new books for each.

I did a little happy dance as soon as I found out!! Mediator is my favorite Meg Cabot series, I just love that world and those characters! So, yeah, that's my happy this week.

Mediator 7:
In REMEMBRANCE (William Morrow), the seventh installment of the Mediator series, all Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).

But when she stumbles across an ancient murder, old ghosts—and ex-boyfriends—aren’t all that come back to haunt her.

REMEMBRANCE will be the first ever adult installment of the Mediator, published by the adult division of HarperCollins, the company that brought you the YA books in the series.

Princess Diaries IX ROYAL WEDDING (William Morrow), Princess Diaries XI, Princess Mia’s planned nuptials to longtime love Michael Moscovitz are in jeopardy when the paparazzi uncover a startling secret: Mia has a long lost younger sister.

Now a scheming politico is using the royal scandal to force Mia’s father from the throne, leaving Genovia without a monarch . . . unless Mia can prove to everyone—especially herself—that she’s finally fit to rule.

ROYAL WEDDING will be the first ever adult installment of the Princess Diaries, published by the adult division of HarperCollins, the company that brought you the YA books in the series.

Princess Diaries Spin Off:
In FROM THE NOTEBOOKS OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCESS (Macmillan) a new middle grade series, I’m taking readers back to Genovia, this time through the illustrated diaries of a spunky new heroine, 12 year old Olivia Grace, who happens to be the long lost half-sister of Princess Mia Thermopolis.

Whats Making Me Happy.... (2)

Hello my peeps!!!
I know I'm a couple of days late but I'm crazy busy with work again, and that's one of the things that's making me happy. Onto the list!

1. I got hired for another term at my school (they last about 4 months)!

2. The Documentary "The Invisible War", which came out last year I think. It's not an easy to watch documentary as it deals with the wide-spread rape that occurs within the US military, tough to watch but very eye opening and very brave from everyone involved.

3. After searching high and low, for months, for a decent waffle, I got to eat this wonder on Saturday:

4. On Sunday I got to spend the day with my sister Boo and my cousin Betty, and that always makes me happy.

So, what about you? Also, if anyone wants to join or do their own version of it feel free!! and let me know so I can check out your blogs!

What's Making Me Happy (1)

Hello my darling peeps! I hope you're all having a wonderful Easter weekend!!

So, recently I began listening to Pop Culture Happy Hour, an NPR podcast, and I love it, and at the end of each episode, all four hosts share what's making them happy that week; I loved the idea of it so I decided to start this weekly feature called What's Making Me Happy.

Part of my one big New Year's resolution was to be kinder to others and to myself, and just not let the world get me down, and I think this fits right into it.

So each week, starting today, I'll share a short list of the things that are making me happy!

Original Image found at Cutestuff.co
1. After a 7.2 earthquake that lasted almost 2 minutes yesterday morning, my city is business as usual. No major damage anywhere in the country, either.

2. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - I never brought into MLP's newest incarnation, though I was a fan of it when I was a kid, but a few weeks ago I started to watch the show and I'm totes hooked. I also discovered that I'm exactly like Pinkie Pie though I don't like parties - go figure.

3. Mah new iPhone! Yup, I'm frivolous but I got a fancy new phone and I love it.

4. And, of course, NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, for being an awesome podcast.

So, that's me, what about you? what's making you happy?

This meme is hosted by Ginger at GReads and music. Each week you can post an old or new song so that it gains more interest! So head on over and link up.

In the last week of Book Playlist Edition I wanted to tackle Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson.
Music is such a big part of their journey that I wanted to include a couple of their songs.

If you have read the book, you know that Amy and Roger's Epic Detour is full of playlists and I admit that I didn't know MOST of the bands and singers on Roger's lists, but a few I did recognize so I putting them here now.

Form Roger's Playlist #4 - Going Places by the New Pornographers.

From Roger's Playlist #5
Starlight by Muse

I remember this song from when I was a kid, and I liked it. But I fell in love with this cover: Time After Time by Quietdrive

From Amy's Playlist #3 All that I Am by Elvis.

And now I'm going to stop...or I'll end up adding more Elvis' songs.

So, what song plays for you?

Tune in Tuesday (30) - Book Playlists Edition: Marchetta Madness Themed!

Book Playlist

This meme is hosted by Ginger at GReads and music. Each week you can post an old or new song so that it gains more interest! So head on over and link up.

We are still doing Book Playlists and for this week -and in theme with Marchetta Madness week - I'm featuring songs from books by Melina Marchetta.

Music is a big theme in Melina's stories, it helps people connect and to heal. Many of Melina's characters are musicians - like Justine, Tom, Frankie, Ben - or need to feel the music like the people from Charyin in Froi.

So here are my Marchetta inspired picks

The Coward of the County by Kenny Rogers - It's a recurring theme in Jellicoe Road, each time Taylor says anything about Kenny Rogers everyone always tells her "Oh, the Coward of the County" and I think Taylor takes it a bit personal. This song always makes me a little sad, which is how Jellicoe makes feel too.

I'm Your Venus by Bananarama - This movie comes up in Saving Francesca - and Tom says he only danced to it because he thought it said I'm your Penis - It's actually quite a feel good song for me so, here it goes. Fair warning, though, the video is SO 80's

Lastly, this song comes up in The Piper's Son, and I love it anyway so I thought, why not? The Blower's Daughter

So, what song plays for you?
