Book Review: Royal Wedding by Meg Cabot

Summary (GoodReads)

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Princess Diaries series, comes the very first adult installment, which follows Princess Mia and her Prince Charming as they plan their fairy tale wedding—but a few poisoned apples could turn this happily-ever-after into a royal nightmare.

For Princess Mia, the past five years since college graduation have been a whirlwind of activity, what with living in New York City, running her new teen community center, being madly in love, and attending royal engagements. And speaking of engagements. Mia's gorgeous longtime boyfriend Michael managed to clear both their schedules just long enough for an exotic (and very private) Caribbean island interlude where he popped the question! Of course Mia didn't need to consult her diary to know that her answer was a royal oui.

But now Mia has a scandal of majestic proportions to contend with: Her grandmother's leaked "fake" wedding plans to the press that could cause even normally calm Michael to become a runaway groom. Worse, a scheming politico is trying to force Mia's father from the throne, all because of a royal secret that could leave Genovia without a monarch. Can Mia prove to everyone— =especially herself—that she's not only ready to wed, but ready to rule as well?

My Thoughts:
It's no secret that I love Meg Cabot's books, I've read them pretty much all, even the older historicals she wrote under other names. And I actually really enjoyed where Forever Princess (Princess Diaries 10) ended - it was, I think, one of the best endings to a series I've seen.

So it wasn't without trepidation that I approached Royal Wedding, and I have to confess that it took me a couple of tries before I could really get into it and read it through - though that might be in part because I was stressed at work - in any case, I did finish it the other day and it was a lot of fun.

First, there was something both familiar and strange in Mia's voice, she's a lot calmer than she used to be as a teen but she still has a tendency to freak out (though her freak outs don't last as long and she's a lot more assertive). Michael was adorable, and I like that they are still together and going strong even though they both acknowledge that they don't get to see each other as much as they'd like (and then they take steps to remedy that).

Lily as a lawyer and Tina as a doctor totally made sense to me, I liked seeing where Mia's old pals were and that at least these two (Tina will forever be my favorite) were a big part of the story. I didn't enjoy the subplot with Boris, though, that needed resolution.

Another thing, I liked seeing Mia's perspective about her sister, Olivia. I really loved that relationship - and I really recommend the companion book "From the Notebooks of a middle-school princess" because Olivia is adorable, though it is a bit of a set-up book - and how she embraced her. That's 100% Mia.

All in all, I enjoyed the book, it was like meeting an old friend I hadn't spoken to in ages, it was fun to see what had changed and what hadn't.

I do recommend it, specially for long time fans.

What's Making Me Happy.., (2)

Hello my darling peeps!
I only got one thing making me happy this week but it's making me SUPER HAPPY!!!

A few days ago, Meg Cabot announced she's going back to both the Princess Diaries and the Mediator Series next year, with new books for each.

I did a little happy dance as soon as I found out!! Mediator is my favorite Meg Cabot series, I just love that world and those characters! So, yeah, that's my happy this week.

Mediator 7:
In REMEMBRANCE (William Morrow), the seventh installment of the Mediator series, all Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).

But when she stumbles across an ancient murder, old ghosts—and ex-boyfriends—aren’t all that come back to haunt her.

REMEMBRANCE will be the first ever adult installment of the Mediator, published by the adult division of HarperCollins, the company that brought you the YA books in the series.

Princess Diaries IX ROYAL WEDDING (William Morrow), Princess Diaries XI, Princess Mia’s planned nuptials to longtime love Michael Moscovitz are in jeopardy when the paparazzi uncover a startling secret: Mia has a long lost younger sister.

Now a scheming politico is using the royal scandal to force Mia’s father from the throne, leaving Genovia without a monarch . . . unless Mia can prove to everyone—especially herself—that she’s finally fit to rule.

ROYAL WEDDING will be the first ever adult installment of the Princess Diaries, published by the adult division of HarperCollins, the company that brought you the YA books in the series.

Princess Diaries Spin Off:
In FROM THE NOTEBOOKS OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCESS (Macmillan) a new middle grade series, I’m taking readers back to Genovia, this time through the illustrated diaries of a spunky new heroine, 12 year old Olivia Grace, who happens to be the long lost half-sister of Princess Mia Thermopolis.

At the Movies: The Princess Diaries

Princess Diaries
Mia is happy going to school in San Francisco and living with her mother. Even though she's flunking algebra and her mother recently started dating Mia's math teacher. She has her best friend Lily and her very own cat, Fat Louie. She's not popular and it's true that Lana - the most popular girl in her school - enjoys teasing her, but she's otherwise quite happy with her lot in life.

But everything changes when the grandmother she has never known shows up to inform her her recently deceased father - with whom Mia never had much contact - was in fact the King of Genovia and that Mia is the new Princess of Genovia.

Mia isn't sure if she has what it takes to be a princess but she submits to princess training and soon finds herself with a new look and a new set of problems, while still trying to decide if she'll accept her post as princess or if she'll turn away from it.

The Princess Diaries the movie is an adaptation of the book by the same name - which I reviewed a couple of weeks ago - and it's fair to say that it's a pretty free adaptation of it. Mostly based on the characters but the situations are different.

I always have fun watching this movie whenever it's on TV. Anna Hathaway was just so cute playing Mia, I liked the guy playing Michale - I never remember the actor's name but I think he's a musician now - and Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse was awesome (she's very different from the book).

I still hate Lily - that doesn't seem to change - but oh, well.

I give this movie a B+

Retro Friday (25) - The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

Retro Friday
Retro Friday is a weekly meme hosted at Angieville and focuses on reviewing books from the past. This can be an old favorite, an under-the-radar book you think deserves more attention, something woefully out of print, etc. Everyone is welcome to join in at any time!

For this week I felt the urge to go WAY back to the first Princess Diaries Book by Meg Cabot.

Princess Diaries
At First Sight: Mia is a regular New York City girl. She's not popular but she has good friends. She shares a nice appartment with her artist mother and spends the Summers with her diplomat father and her grandmother in France. Even if she's on the brink of flunking algebra and - to her own mind - she's the biggest freak of Albert Einstein's freshman class; she's doing all right.

But her regular life is disrupted when her dad shows up with HUGE news. It turns out he's not just any rich diplomat, he's in fact the ruling Prince of Genovia and since he recently discovered he can't have any more children, Mia is his only heir.

Mia doesn't know anything about being a princess, being one has never been her dream, all she wants is to pass the ninth grade. But now she's stuck at Princess Lessons with her tyranical grandmother and unable to tell anyone... until all hell breaks loose.

Second Glance: The Princess Diaries is the first of the series - that eventually included 10 books and a few novelas. Personally, I think this is one of those books that helped put YA in the map.

It's funny and chatty, and fast paced. Mia was such a teenager: a little whinny, self-depricant, funny, obsessive, but I liked her all the way through. I liked her 10 years ago and I liked her last week when I re-read this book.

Even if the pop culture references are getting a little dated, the spirit behind it remians so I don't mind it. Also, I don't always agree with Mia -in the things she does and believes in - but it was fun to visit her again.

I still hate Lily, love Michael and think Tina is the awesomest friend ever. Grandemere is her own brand of evil and she's always fun to read about - she's one of those people you love to hate.

This was my first time reading the book in English but it was awesomely fun.

Bottom Line: If your looking for a quick read that will make you laugh and have a great time, look no further - this is it!

The Princess Diaries Series by Meg Cabot

PD1PD2PD3PD4PD5

The Princess Diaries & Me

Like with many books I've come to adore over the years (like Jane Eyre and Ivanhoe) it all started with a movie. I was in Prep School, a sixteen year old freak with too much time on her hands who disregarded school, even as a junior, and spent every Wednesday at the movies and the rest of the time trying to wrestle the remote out of her grandmother's hand so she could watch Card Captor Sakura instead of the talk shows Grandma liked so much.

One day I had gone with my cousin Betty to see some movie and I saw the trailer for The Princess Diaries (And, really, how cute was Anne Hathaway back then?) and of course I wanted to see the movie, so when it opened I was there. I Adored it, and googled it (I had just gotten internet at home) and came across www.MegCabot.com which back then wasn't as it is now and mostly only featured these super long excerpts of The Princess Diaries and Princess in the Spotlight (and pictures of Tiaras and combat boots, I remember that).

I was intrigued but ultimately, we didn't have the books here in my country and I hadn't discovered amazon yet, so a couple of years passed before I actually picked one of the books.

I was 18 and lots of thing had happened, like my Grandma had recently died and I was thinking of dropping out of college since I totally wasn't feeling it. In the midst of this I left my country for the first time ever and went to Spain. It so happened that it was Book Week in Spain, and while I was wandering inside of a book store (I had never been inside of one that carried books published after 1980 that weren't on politics) I came across a blue book called Princess in the Spotlight (see left) and I bought it, I couldn't find the first one since apparently they ran out of them in Spain, or something, and I figured I had seen the movie, I should be able to follow the book (I was) and I loved it! I read i once on a long train ride from Granada to Madrid and then twice over during the 12 hour flight back back home.

It kept me sane. I loved Mia right away, she was awkward and funny and reminded me of a period of my life in which I had been very happy: High School (and I'm not even lying). When I came home -and dropped out of college much to my Mom's disgust - I devoted my newly freed time to hunt down book One and I learned how Mia discovered she was a Princess). It took me about a month, and many trips downtown but I found it and read it and then re-read book two.

For a long time that was it, my parents weren't thrilled with my not going to college-not doing anything for a while plan; so I was broke (even though I had finally discovered amazon and stopped being bitter about the sad state of publishing in my country, it sucked then and it still sucks now) and eventually got tired of vegging out home, reading fanfiction and decided to go back to college and my parents gave me back my allowance and I blew it pretty much on books. I got Princess in Love and I squealed like Tina Hakim Baba almost all the way through. And that bit near the end about how Fat Louie came to Mia? One of the sweetest tid bits I've ever read.

Then, I suppose, we come to Book 4: Princess in Training a lot of people have told me this is not their favorite book but I actually really liked it, again, it spoke about being awkward at 14 and unsure. And it mentioned Star Wars heavily, I'm a SW sucker.

Also, around the time I read it I became really involved with Meg Cabot Book Club and I've made some seriously awesome friends at it (I know the rules, so I'll stop babbling about the MCBC, but I'll answer something a few people have asked me: How was the forum when it first started? Answer: Pink).

And Pink features prominently on the next book Book 5: Princess in Pink which relates Mia's quest to go to Prom with her boyfriend Michael! And one of Grandmere's many lies came out on the open! and Rocky arrived!

Oh, and the Snowflake Necklace makes its first appearance and Mia turns fifteen. Half way through and I was still laughing. Even though I was starting to dislike Lily at this point. I was becoming more and more a fan of Tina. Tina the world rules.

And so we reach books 6 and 7: Princess in Training and Party Princess, by this point, though I'm still laughing, I'm starting to get very annoyed at Lily and a little at Mia with all the whinnying. I guess everything does seem life and death at that age. In a nutshell: Tina and Boris are going out (Lily dumps him in Princess in Pink), Mia ends up as student body president thanks to Lily's machinations. Then in Party Princess Hate-When-They-Put-Corn-in-the-Chili-Guy gets a name: J.P. and Lily takes up with him. At this point I'm not yet annoyed with J.P.; and Mia and Michael talk about sex: yes, he expects they'll have it some day, but he's also willing to wait until she's ready, though he want's to keep taking about it. Which actually does make sense.

By the time I got to Book 8: Princess on the Brink, I admit it had been a while since I had kept up with the series, I was a bit busy with school, finally deciding I was more than half way through with the necessary credits to finish and that it would be dumb if I didn't finish it. And my expectations were a little low, I have to admit. Yet, when I did get around reading the book I loved it!!! Mia is finally an upper class person, Michael has this huge project he wants to do... in Japan and Mia is debating weather or not is time to go ahead and do it, and if that will be enough to make Michael stay.

In short, lots of things are happening all at once and Mia is trying to catch up and though she means well she ends up making a big mistake. A trademark Mia freak out might have ruined her life! (I actually reviewed this here)

And now we come to Book 9: Princess Mia (also more detailed review here) and this is the point were I fell in love with the series again, all my faith restored. Mia's battle with depression, Dr. Knuts, Michael being gone and wanting to stay broken up! Lily being mean. and J.P. -who, by the end, was beginning to annoy me - starting to show his true colors; and Mia *gasp* befriending her former nemesis Lana. This book, I think, it's a lot about Mia finding her way on her own (with help of those that love her, but without using them as emotional clutches). And, of course, the humor is still there.

This book was like meeting an old friend again, and I found myself wanting to hug Mia and tell her everything would be all right. I was emotional all the way trough, I won't deny it.

And now we reach the end Book 10: Forever Princess (which I just read and reviewed here). Like I said, Michael is back, J.P. reached new heights of jerkiness, I actually came to like Lily again (or for the first time if I am to be absolutely honest). Tina keeps beeing the sweetest friend ever. There is plenty of Fat Louie and Rocky.

Basically, all I ever hoped would happen came to pass and it was great!!!!

Along with one of my favorite book quotes ever, courtesy of Mia:"Life is not easy for us unicorns, you know. We are a dying breed."

In a many of ways, HRH Princess Mia has been with me through a lot, just as I like to think I went through a lot with her, too. And for me, and for a tons of fans, she's not only a character in a book but a friend, and though I'm not exactly expecting to have more books about her int he future, I do hope to hear from her again, someday.

Forever Princess by Meg Cabot

Forever PrincessPrincess Diaries Volume 10: Forever Princess

Mia's life finally seems perfect: she's a couple of weeks away from graduating high school, she got into every college she applied to and has great friends (Even her once nemesis Lana) and a gorgeous boyfriend who adores her.

Well in paper, a lot of things sound prefect. But Mia, as usual, has been lying and keeping secrets: like telling everyone that she didn't get into any school or telling everyone that her senior project is a boring recount of the olive oil press technology when instead she wrote a steamy romance novel set in medieval times (which she's trying to publish with zero success so far). Or the fact that she isn't all that attracted to J.P. - her current boyfriend.

Then, because in Mia's word nothing is ever simple, Michael comes back from Japan and suddenly he's back in her life and smelling as good as ever!

With this book I did something I hadn't done in a long, long time: I stayed up all night reading it (I have the dark circles under my eyes as I type this to prove it); I just couldn't stop, and I kept snorting with laughter and generally having a goofy smile on my face, even at four in the morning.

Everything gets resolved (I'm not going to say how, since I'm trying to behave) and in most satisfying ways.

Few times, if ever, I have been more pleased with how a book series ends.

Mia shall remain Forever Princess and forever in our hearts.

Princess Mia by Meg Cabot

Princess Diaries 9
Mia's long time boyfriend Michael just dumped her, well, they sort of mutually dumped each other, and her best friend Lily isn't talking to her anymore and suddenly she finds herself in therapy because she doesn't care about anything anymore and doesn't want to leave her bed.

Things certainly don't seem to be going well for Mia.

However, slowly and surely, with the help of a nutty doctor (Dr. Knutz) and her friends - old, like Tina, and new like Lana Weinberg - Mia is begins to dig her way out of the hole where she had fallen in the aftermath of Michael's leaving and Lily's total bitchy behavior.

And when she discovers that a long ago Princess of Genovia made a decision about the future of the country that could potentially change Genovia as we know it, she takes a stand and sticks to it valiantly.

I loved this book, and okay, I sort of cheated alittle because it was actually an audio book, but no matter. It's funny but a different funny than previous books, it still made me laugh but different, I think Mia is finally growing up and becoming 'unstuck' from her former, more childish self.

After reading as Mia grew up for so many years it was a delight to see her finally come into her own and start to become the awesome young woman she could be.

Princess on the Brink by Meg Cabot

Princess on the Brink
Princess on the Brink (Princess Diaries Book 8) by Meg Cabot

A very quick way to sum up the Princess Diaries Series is to say that is about a girl, Mia, who we met when she was 14 and her father told her she was actually Princess Amelia heir to the throne of Genovia a small country in the way of Monaco. Mia never wanted to be a princess and most of the time she does not like being one but, through the course of the books, she grows a little each time.

By the time we get to Princess on the Brink, Mia is now sixteen she has a boyfriend, Michael, whom she loves and things seem to be going okay, until Michael announces he's moving to Japan for a year or more and so the book begins.

Mia has one week to convince Michael not to go and she's fairly willing to do whatever it takes to get him to stay... until she finds out some things aren't exactly as she was imaging them. There is a classic Mia-blow out and well, can't say what happens next.

I will say though that Princess on the Brink still made me laugh like all the others PD books made me laugh and that, thankfully, Mia finally seems to be growing up and leaving behind her whinny self which made books six and seven a bit of a trial at some points. Meg Cabot still has that same humor and you still like Mia and when she finally sees, she sees it fairly clearly and tries to makes things right. That's the thing about Mia, she might blow it but she always tries to make it right which makes her so endearing and likable... however, Mia might just discover that sometimes it is too late.

I really liked it, I can't wait to get Princess Mia and Princess Forever, this last one out in December, and see how this story ends.
